ViennaSkiing.com is a blog about backcountry skiing in Eastern Austria focused specifically on the region around Vienna. I am the webmaster and my name is Helmut Gassler. I am a geographer by training and working as a regional economist in Vienna.
In my free time I am an enthusiastic backcountry skier and in constant love affairs with my skis. Hence, I used to go on the annual pilgrimage for Ullr’s sake year after year and was searching for these special powder days in obscure and far-away corners of the European Alps. Becoming somewhat tired of travelling thousands of kilometres in the rush to find the right place at the right time I’ve developed recently a certain love for the local hills here around Vienna, a region commonly known in Austria as ‘Alpenostrand’ (literally the Eastern Fringe of the Alps).

About this blog
This blog is dedicated to skiing in the Vienna region and its mountains. The main purpose is to demonstrate this region’s great but often overlooked attractiveness for skiing and ski mountaineering. Consequently, the content of this blog will range from trip reports in the Vienna region and beyond as well as tips and tricks for the fellow skier.
Being an enthusiastic skier myself and after living in Vienna for some years now, I would like to share the great potential of this region as a skiing and freeride location with you, the fellow reader. Additionally, I will document the progress of my little ongoing project “1500plus” which involves skiing every significant mountain of Lower Austria.

nice to hear from you. It is definitely time to think about storing your mountain bike in the cellar and getting your skis ready for the snow (which hopefully will arrive sooner than later). Looking forward to ski with you again.

i hab mir gedacht wenn da schon so ambitionierte tiefschneefahrer in der umgebung wien zu finden sind, sollt i mi mal mit meinen in NÖ produzierten bigmountain-lanzen bei euch melden. würd mi freuen wenn ma uns mal zum austausch zamredn könnten.

Hallo Flo,
Ja gute Idee. Leider ist momentan die Schneelage bei uns noch immer nicht wirklich ausreichen für genussreiche off-piste-Ausflüge. Ab dem nächsten merkbaren Neuschneefall geht aber sicher schon ein wenig. Ein gemeinsamer “Teamausflug” wär dann eine tolle Idee.

Sehr schöne Seite, die du da im Netz hast, welche auch mal den “wilden” Osten unseres Landes und seine Berge vorstellt. Freut mich vor allem, dass es a in der Wiener/WU Gegend Powder fanatische Jungs und Mädels gibt. Wäre fein, wenn i a amal mich so an “Teamausflug” anschliessen dürfte. Langsam kommt ja der Schnee auch ein bisserl ergiebiger in den Ostalpenraum.

Hallo Michl,
ja, sobald die Bedingungen besser sind wär es in der Tat angebracht einmal “alle Ostskifahrer” zusammenzubringen und einen Alpenostrandausflug zu organisieren. Leider sind derzeit die Verhältnisse noch immer “grenzwertige” . Hoffen wir auf einen schneereichen Februar.

nette seite, saison war nicht so schneeerfüllt und ist nun (leider) schon vorbei, aber die geilste abfahrt letzte saison war der powderrun von der hohen wand/nö, näher an wien gehts fast nicht.
