Goeller. A Many-sided Ski Mountain

by helmut on August 23, 2009

The Göller (1766m) is one of those mountains in the Vienna region which offer ski runs just in every direction. The summit of the Göller is high above the local tree line and surrounded by wide, open bowls with steep faces. Hence, the ridges offer relatively safe ascents during the whole winter while the descents through the bowls require good avalanche conditions.

The two usual approaches for the summit are either from the North (ascent from Gscheid over the Gsenger and the North ridge) and from the South starting at the Lahnsattel (1050m) and ascending over the south side of the Terzer Göller. Both ascents are relatively straightforward and usually tracked.

The view from the summit is fabulous. With clear air the hilly landscape north of the Alps and the flat Danube Valley lies beyond you. To the East the mighty Schneeberg massif offers a good view to its standard runs (Schneegraben, Wurzengraben, Salvisgraben, Hoyosgraben). Looking to the South and West the whole range of the Styrian Alps from the Veitsch and Hochschwab area to the famous Gesäuse (Ennstal valley) gives insight to the many fine backcountry skiing opportunities in this corner of the Alps.

The shaded bowls and deep ravines of the Göller guarantee good skiing conditions until late spring (usually late April or even early May). Then the corn snow allows for some short but interesting steep skiing through the various couloirs of the Hueherkralle.
